Angus King III Launches Democratic Bid for Governor

Portland, Maine — May 7, 2025

Angus King III, son of U.S. Senator and former Maine Governor Angus King, has officially entered the 2026 gubernatorial race as a Democrat. His candidacy introduces a prominent name into an already competitive field vying to succeed term-limited Democratic Governor Janet Mills.

King III is an energy executive with business experience. His father, Angus King, served as Maine’s independent governor from 1995 to 2003 and has represented the state in the U.S. Senate since 2013, recently securing a third term in 2024 .
Joining King III in the Democratic primary are Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. former State Senate President Troy Jackson, who has formed an exploratory committee is expected to announce his candidacy. Bellows, known for her leadership in civil liberties and voting rights, announced her candidacy earlier this year .
On the Republican side, declared candidates include Robert Charles, a former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, and Robert Wessels, a former Paris selectman. The GOP field is expected to expand, with several potential contenders expressing interest .
As the race unfolds, Maine voters will assess candidates’ visions for the state’s future, with key issues likely to include economic development, healthcare, and education. The 2026 election marks a significant transition, as Governor Mills concludes her second term, opening the door for new leadership in Augusta.
