Former President Farmaajo Warns Against Politicizing NCC

Mogadishu, Somalia – May 7, 2025 — Former President of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmaajo,” has issued a sharp warning to current President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, urging him not to transform the National Consultative Council (NCC) into what he called a “de facto political party.”

In a strongly worded statement released Tuesday, Farmaajo condemned the recent moves by the Hassan administration regarding the NCC, calling them “unacceptable” and cautioning that they could destabilize the country during a critical election year.

“The NCC was established as a forum for national consensus, not a political tool for unilateral decision-making,” Farmaajo said. “Turning it into a partisan entity violates both the spirit of our constitution.”
The former president stressed the importance of respecting Somalia’s constitutional framework, particularly during an election season he described as “highly sensitive.” He warned that any plans perceived as “one-sided” risk undermining trust in the democratic process and could deepen political divisions across the country.
Farmaajo called on President Hassan to halt any actions that appear to bypass broader political consensus and instead urged him to initiate an inclusive and transparent national dialogue involving all key stakeholders.
“This is not the time for exclusionary politics,” Farmaajo said. “Somalia’s stability depends on cooperation, not confrontation.”
The statement comes amid growing political tension over electoral reforms and accusations from opposition leaders that the current administration is consolidating power ahead of next year’s elections.
The Office of the President has not yet responded to Farmaajo’s statement.
