KDF to lead other security agencies in flood response – Ruto

President William Ruto has announced that the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) will lead other security agencies in managing the serious environmental crisis being experienced in the country due to flooding.

Ruto highlighted the capacity of the military in terms of equipment and expertise in tackling the situation.

“I have discussed this with the new CDF, and we will be asking the KDF to roll out its capabilities to support other agencies in dealing with the situation that we are having in the country at the moment,” he said.

The head of state made the remarks during the swearing-in and inauguration of ranks of the newly promoted Chief of Defense Forces General Charles Muriu Kahariri and two other service commanders.

Kenya Airforce commander Major General John Omenda was promoted and named the Vice Chief of Defense Forces.

Major General Fatuma Ahmed was named the Commander of Kenya Airforce to succeed Maj Gen Omenda.

Last week, Ruto ordered the military to join the search and retrieval of bodies in the Mai Mahiu flood tragedy.

Officers from the NYS were also involved in the process.

The death toll due to the floods and landslides has so far hit 188 with several others missing.

Critical infrastructure has also been damaged as a result of the floods with transport being paralyzed in some areas.

Ruto is also scheduled to address the nation today.

During the ceremony, Ruto also challenged the officers to serve the nation with impartiality.

He underscored the distinguished legacy of professionalism and loyalty that has defined KDF throughout its history.

“You will serve the people of Kenya, none of you has been appointed to serve your communities, regions, faiths or any other partisan pursuit,” he said.

Ruto also reminded them that the assignment bestowed on them was to serve the country and the people of Kenya.

He said that they must always remember that it is a solemn responsibility, and they will exercise authority, which comes with huge responsibility.

“Responsibility comes with accountability. It is my expectation and that of Kenyans that the authority you will exercise will come with enormous acknowledgement of responsibility on your shoulders and the accountability that comes with it.”

He also congratulated the officers as they took charge of the Kenya Defense Forces.

“You have my support, my prayers, and my goodwill as you discharge your responsibilities and the people of Kenya have tremendous goodwill for the military,” he said.

“Otherwise, I want to congratulate you and your families for the responsibilities that you have assumed.”
