President William Ruto has endorsed the peace plan proposed by US President Joe Biden to address the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Ruto in a statement on Monday said the initiative is a crucial step in ending the conflict in the region.

“I welcome the roadmap put forward by President Joe Biden to bring an end to the escalating and widening conflict between Israel and Palestine,” President Ruto said.

The proposed comprehensive plan initiated jointly by Qatar and Egypt outlines the measures to address the situation and unite the two warring countries.

The first phase of the plan includes a six-week ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas of Gaza and release of hostages and remains.

It also involves the return of Palestinians to North Gaza and access to humanitarian assistance for conflict-affected persons.

President Ruto further underscored the importance of the proposed plan in paving way for a reconstruction programme in Gaza.

“Given the astronomical human suffering that this conflict has inflicted, I implore Israeli and Palestinian leadership, and all parties of goodwill, to support this plan,” Ruto said.

The President also emphasized that if the plan is strongly endorsed it will lead to Israel and Palestine coexisting with each other leading to a more and just region around the world.

“It is my firm belief that if this plan is strongly endorsed and faithfully observed, it will form the basis for a permanent ceasefire and the implementation of a two-state solution,” Ruto said.

This, he said, will contribute to a more stable region and world.
