Somalia’s NCC meeting Concludes in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, May 7, 2025 – The National Consultative Council (NCC) of Somalia concluded its high-level meeting today in Mogadishu, reaffirming its commitment to national unity, the war against Al-Shabaab, and the country’s democratization process. The meeting brought together leaders from the Federal Government and Federal Member States with the exception of Puntland president, and concluded with strong support for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s call for a comprehensive national dialogue.

In a joint communique released following the closing session, the NCC emphasized the importance of unity and coordination among all levels of government to effectively confront the persistent threat posed by Al-Shabaab. The Council underscored the need for inclusive dialogue as a foundation for national reconciliation and a more resilient democratic process.

As part of its resolutions, the NCC tasked the Federal Ministry of Interior with submitting recommendations and proposals on the situation in Jubaland. The aim is to explore avenues for establishing a new legal and legitimate regional administration that reflects the aspirations of local communities and strengthens Somalia’s federal system.

In a significant development, the Council officially recognized SSC-Khatumo as a Regional Member State. The Federal Ministry of Interior has been directed to work closely with SSC-Khatumo leadership to complete the necessary steps for its transition into a fully functional regional state.

The NCC is expected to reconvene in the coming months to review progress on the resolutions and further advance Somalia’s peace and state-building agenda
