Two Killed In Hunt For Gunmen Who Killed Police Officer Escorting KCSE Exam In Siaya

Two people were killed and two firearms were recovered on Wednesday after a fire exchange ensued in Awinga area in Alego Usonga, Siaya County when detectives were trailing the assailants who killed a police officer escorting the KCSE exam on Monday.

Police said the assailants are believed to be returnees from Somalia. Copies of the Quran and prayer mats were recovered from their hideout.

In the Monday morning incident, the deceased was in the company of his colleague and the centre manager when they were ambushed by the assailants with crude weapons.

According to eyewitnesses, the officers had just alighted from a school bus that had ferried them to pick up the examination papers from Siaya County headquarters but alighted a few meters away because the bus could not reach the school due to the bad state of the road.

While the centre manager fled for safety, the thugs killed one of the officers and injured the other. The thugs escaped with the officers’ firearms before taking off.

Security personnel rushed to the scene and took the injured officer to Siaya County Referral Hospital for treatment. The body of the deceased was taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

 

Siaya County Commissioner Julius Otieno and the County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo who led the security team that visited the scene and picked the injured officer to Siaya County referral hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
